Top Five Things Employers Look For In A Potential Candidate
Whether you need to be independent or pay off loans, finding a job is extremely important. You’ve applied to several businesses and landed your first interview. Now what… It would be really helpful to know what employers are looking for so you could put your best foot forward. These five things will ensure that you impress your potential employer and possibly secure the position you desire.
1. First Impressions – Well groomed candidates stand out to employers. Hair must be well combed; for ladies a conservative hairstyle such as buns and up dos are acceptable. Do not wear loud or colorful extensions and extravagant hairstyles. For men, clean cut hair or neat cornrows are acceptable. If you have any visible tattoos it would be wise to wear long sleeves or makeup foundation over them. Keep jewelry and perfume to a minimum and ladies stick to a natural palette. Ensure that your outfit is well ironed and is not too tight or short. A little tip is to try on the outfit the night before, raise your hands above your head, sit and pretend to be picking something up from the floor, if anything feels uncomfortable then change. Stockings are not essential, however if you do choose to wear them ensure that they are you skin tone and there are no holes or runs. Mayfair is a good and inexpensive brand, no fish net stockings.
2. Qualifications – Your qualifications must relate to the position you applied for. You will be wasting not only the employer’s time but your time as well which can create a very frustrating and disappointing experience.
3. Confidence – Step into your interview with confidence. Maintain eye contact and give a firm handshake. Be courteous and sincere. Be yourself, do not fake it – they will spot it.
4. Leadership – Employers want to see that you take initiative and that you can think for yourself. Volunteer work would be an asset. Be equipped with experiences that you can share. Remember leadership isn’t always about being the boss, it’s also about being a good team player.
5. Communication – Good communication seals the deal on a great interview. This is where you articulate your experience and expectations. Use standard English and no slang. Answer questions clearly, giving relevant examples were necessary. It is important to note that even if you are applying for a general post, do not ever tell an employer that you will take “anything”. This is HUGE turn off. Instead speak about your goals and the position you would like to have. Human Resource managers have a lot of connections so even if they cannot offer you a job they can set up an interview with another employer who can.
Good Luck in your interviews!
