Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Saint Lucia Chamber of Shipping

Job Overview:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Saint Lucia Chamber of Shipping is a visionary and strategic leader responsible for advancing the interests of the maritime industry, promoting sustainable shipping practices, and enhancing the competitiveness of the sector. The CEO will be the face of the organisation, representing its members in discussions with stakeholders, including government agencies, international bodies, industry partners, and the media. The role involves developing and executing strategic plans, advocating for regulatory policies, and driving initiatives that support a thriving maritime industry. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the strategic vision and goals of the Chamber of Shipping along with the Board of Directors.
  • Lead the organisation in promoting the interests of the shipping industry, including advocating for favourable policies and regulations.
  • Identify key challenges and opportunities in the maritime sector and develop strategies to address them.
  • Lead and constantly monitor the organisation’s strategy execution process, particularly strategic initiatives designed to achieve major goals and set targets for the Chamber of Shipping.
  • Keep abreast of developments in local, regional, and foreign markets to guide the development of new services and meet revenue targets.
  • Report to the Board of Directors and the relevant Minister as necessary, on matters relating to the organisation. Attend Board and Board Committee meetings and apprise the members of the extent of achievement of the strategic objectives, corporate performance, and other critical matters affecting the agency.
  • In close collaboration with the Finance Manager, recommend a yearly budget for Board approval and oversee the prudent management of the organisation’s resources within those budget guidelines according to the strategic and operational business plans.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with member companies, industry partners, governmental agencies, and international maritime organisations.
  • Act as a thought leader, representing the Chamber in public forums, industry events, and international conferences.
  • Engage with media and public relations teams to promote the Chamber’s initiatives and enhance its public image.
  • Ensure that the organisation and its mission, programmes, products, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Chamber, including budgeting, financial management, and staff supervision.
  • Ensure the effective management of resources, including financial planning, fundraising, and membership growth.
  • Monitor industry trends, data, and market developments to provide timely insights and recommendations to the Board and members.
  • Champion initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of shipping, including promoting the adoption of green technologies and sustainable practices.
  • Lead efforts to drive innovation within the maritime industry, identifying new opportunities for growth and competitiveness.
  • Collaborate with international bodies and industry stakeholders to develop and promote best practices in sustainable shipping.
  • Develop, in conjunction with each direct report, their respective development plan following the designated competency assessment and performance measurement as per the Performance Management System. Provide continuous coaching and review performance.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Business, Maritime Studies, International Relations, or a related field.

Or a 

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Maritime Studies, International Relations, or a related field with relevant experience will also be considered.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the maritime or shipping industry, at least ten (10) years’ experience in a senior management position.   At least five (5) of those should be at the helm of an equivalent-level institution with a minimum of three (3) years’ private sector experience at a senior level.
  • Proven track record in advocacy, policy development, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience working with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and international organisations.

  • Proven track record of effectively recruiting and managing a team of professionals.
