New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships 2019
The Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations informs of the call for applicants for the New Zealand (NZ) Commonwealth Scholarships 2019 to suitably qualified Saint Lucians.
The NZ Commonwealth Scholarships are prestigious scholarships for people from developing countries to study in New Zealand. The scholarships are intended to foster and build potential leaders, as well as equipping individuals with skills and knowledge to benefit their home country.
NZ Commonwealth Scholarships are available for the following levels of study:
- Master’s Degree (1 – 2 years).
- PhD (Up to 3.5 years)
Area of study must directly align to the relevant sectors listed below:
- Climate Change and the Environment
- Food Security and Agriculture
- Renewable Energy
- Disaster Risk Management
Applicants are asked to note that the NZ Commonwealth Scholarships will open onFebruary 1st, 2019.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for selection an applicant must:
- be a citizen of Saint Lucia residing in Saint Lucia for at least two (2) years prior to application;
- be at least eighteen (18) years and not more than thirty-nine (39) years old before the start of the scholarship;
- by March 31st, 2019, would have completed at least twelve (12) months (or 24 months part-time) work experience relevant to the scholarship study applied for;
- demonstrate how the study to be undertaken will enable you to contribute to the sustainable development of your country;
- select an area of study listed on the “Government of Saint Lucia List of Priority Areas for National Training”, which can be accessed on the Government of Saint Lucia website;
- be in good physical and mental health to complete the program successfully;
- possess the language competency to undertake studies in the language of the institution or country of study; and
- agree in writing to return to Saint Lucia following completion of the scholarship and contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.
Value of the Scholarship
Scholarship award provides the following support:
- full tuition fees;
- living allowance (a stipend) of NZ$491 per week. This will help with a scholar’s basic living expenses, but it is not enough to cover the living costs of any family members;
- an establishment allowance of NZ$3000. This is to help with set-up costs in New Zealand. For example, you can use it for accommodation expenses, text books, or other study materials;
- medical insurance when you are in New Zealand;
- travel to and from your own country. This is for travel from your own country at the start of the scholarship, and for return travel at the end of your scholarship;
- travel insurance;
- travel home during your scholarship. Applicants are allowed for one or two trips home, depending on the length of your scholarship); and
- help with research and thesis costs.
How to Apply
In addition to the Government of Saint Lucia Scholarship Application Form, all applicants must complete and submit the requisite New Zealand Scholarship Application Form to the HRD Unit. The form can be accessed from here.
